What is IAM
IAM, or Identity and Access Management, is a service in AWS that helps you control who can access your AWS resources and what actions they can perform. It allows you to manage users, assign them permissions, and ensure secure access to your cloud environment.
Important points regarding IAM
- You can create maximum upto 5000 IAM users in a single aws account. If you want to increase you can go to Service quotas (it is a service in AWS which is used to increasing the limits).
Steps to create AWS IAM user and assigning permission
First of all you have to login to AWS Management console. And search for IAM.
Here you have to go to Users section and click on Create user. A user is a person or application who needs access to your AWS resources.
Here are the examples of an IAM user
- Individual User: An employee for a business who needs to use the AWS Management Console to control things like EC2 servers and S3 buckets.
- Application User: A program or script that needs to use API calls to connect to AWS services. Access keys would be used by this person to get into programs.
Next you have to specify the user details such as user_name and if you want to give AWS management console access you can tick mark.
Now here you tick the “I want to create an IAM user”
After that you can set the custom passwords also or you can autogenerate password. In this case, i am autogenerating the password. And ticking the option where user can create a new password after the first time login.
The next step is to attach the permission. There are three types of permission option
- You can add a user to group
- You can copy the permission
- You can attach the policies directly (Policies is a JSON document where all the permission are defined).
I am giving the “AdministratorAccess” permission to our user. You can choose any permission policies based on your usecase,
After that click on the Next.
Next you have to review all the things that you have done and then click on Create user.
Now you can see your console login details. You can download these details or copy it and save somewhere inside your computer.
Note that these credentials are valid until you explicitly delete the user from your account. It is like giving long term credentials to the IAM user.
Now you have to logout and sign in through as IAM user. Enter your credentials and click on sign in
Next you can create a new password and confirm password change.
Now your successfully login to AWS management console. Here you have to all the administrator level permission to this account because you have given administrator access to the account.
