Introduction to KPI in PowerBI
KPI (Key Performance Indicator): A hybrid visualization of line charts and stacked column charts to show trends and multiple data series comparisons in a single chart.
Important fields in KPI
- Value: This field is responsible for showing the main content, such as Total Sales.
- Target: This field is responsible for indicating whether the current target has been achieved.
- Trend Axis: This field is responsible for displaying the progress towards the target, showing how much is left to achieve or how much has been accomplished.
Dataset description
This set of data includes information about sales for a store. It has information about transactions, like details about products, sales numbers, and information about customers over time. This set of data can be used to look at how well the company is hitting its sales goals, as well as its profit margins, customer behavior, and sales performance. Column Name | Description |
---|---|
Date | The date on which the sales transaction occurred. |
Product | The name or identification of the product sold. |
Quantity | The number of units of the product sold in the transaction. |
Price | The unit price of the product at the time of the transaction. |
Rate | The rate of the product after applying any discounts. |
Discount | The discount applied to the product during the sale, either in percentage or monetary value. |
Customer | The name or unique ID of the customer making the purchase. |
Location | The geographical location (city, region, or country) where the transaction took place. |
Total Sale | The total sales value for the transaction, calculated as Quantity * Rate . |
Total Profit | The total profit generated from the transaction, calculated after deducting the cost of the goods sold from the total sales. |
Target Sale | The sales target set for the transaction, which could be used to assess performance against goals. |

Procedure to create KPI in PowerBI
Step1: Open your PowerBI Desktop on your Device.
Step2: Click on Get Data button in Home Ribbon and select Text/CSV.
Step3: Open Prompt box will be open to select your text or csv file.
Step4: After selection of dataset, It will pop up a window for Load OR Transform Data. Click on Load to use data on PowerBI.
Step5: In the following picture, data has been loaded successfully.
Step6: Select KPI from Visualizations Section (Right Hand Side).
Step7: Here, we’ll put the following data (from Sales) in different fields:

After that you have to click on format your visual. Go to the General click on turn on visual border and the shadow. In the Visual border make the rounded corner of 15 px.
Insights from the chart
With this KPI in PowerBI, we are showing the total sales in bold and large font and the target sales as `Goal` and to the right of the target, profit and loss percentage in the target and achievement view.
- Red: Not Achieved Target
- Green: Achieved Target
- Yellow: Neutral
